As if Marion had been expecting Jethro's call, a signaler rests on the opposite side of her cup of tea. She cheerfully picks it up to answer Jethro's signal. She has a wittily wise quality and whimsical presence throughout the following interaction of the visual cutting-to-and-fro dialog with her confused son.
MARION Yes. Hello, Jethro. Has Mr. Clark arrived?
JETHRO Uhh, as a matter of fact, yes. He's standing right over there with pa.
MARION Your pa's not makin' too much of a fuss, now, is he? Yellin' and yelpin' at the poor man?
JETHRO Um, just a little... [BEAT] So ma, you arranged for Mr. Clark to come over for supper?
MARION That's right, Jethro. And you're gonna love what's cookin'. You won't have eaten this good since... last night!
JETHRO I'll be lookin' forward to that, ma, but, uhh... [BEAT] I dunno how happy pa's gonna be about this...
MARION I do. We'll just haveta hold 'im down if he wants to rampage like a Martian Toarilla beast.
JETHRO (tone of reluctance) Yeah... [BEAT] I guess we'll see ya in a few minutes.
MARION Ya know, given your father's sure to be hearing all this right now, I'm surprised that hot-headed husband 'ah mine has kept silent durin' this communication.
During the communication, Papa John's silence was a prelude to a bubbling eruption, that Papa is now triggered to release. He yelps out louder than he ever had before (in this sequence) letting Marion get a feel for his extreme disapproval.
PAPA JOHN Marion!!!!!!!!??
Papa John's shriek yell echoes forcefully into the air, unjustly squeaking through the weak speaker of Marion's signaler. She shuts off the device and places it down. For the first time, we pan to Lily and hear a soft, worried utterance from the nervous young woman.
LILY Father sounded very angry.
MARION Now don't you worry about that, Lily. I'll keep him in line.
LILY What's going to happen when he finds out?
MARION Sometimes, it's as hard to see as a pigeon in a dust storm, but I know your father loves me. He's gotta bigger mouth than the dune crater of Venus, but he'd never try to hurt any of us. He loves his family. And he loves you.
LILY I know. [BEAT] I'm just worried for Thomas.
MARION Well, your father ain't got much love for him.
